This painting is inspired by the powerful protests of women in Mexico who rise up against deep-rooted inequality - from wage gaps and limited political representation to alarming rates of gender-based violence, including femicides.
It is a reinterpretation of a photograph by photojournalist Mahé Elipe, who captured a striking moment during a protest. In this painting, masked women in vivid pink gowns move with force and grace, representing a moment from the Global Day of Action for Legal and Safe Abortion in Mexico City on September 28, 2023.
These women belong to Las del Aquelarre, a feminist performance collective that fuses choreography, irony, and satire into public interventions aimed not only at demanding reproductive justice but also at strategically capturing attention. Their bold aesthetics and theatrical presence often act as a decoy, drawing media and police focus away from more militant protest groups like the Black Bloc - activists who target physical symbols of patriarchal power such as monuments and government buildings. This tactic allows a broader range of protest strategies to coexist within the feminist movement.
By performing in spaces historically closed to women’s resistance, they subvert the stereotype of femininity as passive or ornamental. Their presence at protests embodies a deeper commitment to collective care and protection, offering both visibility and solidarity within the movement.
This particular march followed a historic ruling by Mexico’s Supreme Court, which decriminalized abortion at the federal level - a major victory for reproductive rights. Las del Aquelarre’s performance, situated within this larger political moment, speaks to the evolving strategies of feminist protest in Latin America, where art, ritual, and direct action are often inseparable.
