Exhibition - Hear all voices, Treehouse, NDSM, Amsterdam

The installation Life from a different perspective was part of the Hear all Voices exhibition that took place at Treehouse, NDSM during the summer of 2023.

This art and science project reflects on how people in a multicultural society have different needs. It focusses on a flexible and inclusive approach to meet these needs and challenges the one-size-fits-all idea. Particularly, it highlights the importance of recognizing and valuing singularities within communities. It encourages people to consider their own needs, while promoting empathy for others’ needs, and fostering a sense of shared responsibility. The project seeks to generate a deeper insight about the space and relevance of different voices in our society, and of ways of creating an inclusive
environment where these voices can be heard and coexist.

Using a multi-methods approach and mixed media art techniques, we prototype alternative governance systems. We depart from an analogy in which different type of seeds with distinct needs represent people’s needs and voices. Greenhouses represent societies where governances take place, and water the available resource to tackle the needs of the seeds. We invited the viewers to decide on which greenhouse they wanted to provide the available water to.

A project in collaboration with Ana Pinho (Postdoctoral researcher, University of Amsterdam).

DESCRIPTION OF THE GREENHOUSE SYSTEM

We have 3 greenhouses representing 3 pre-existing possible ways of governance. Each greenhouse consists of two types of seeds that have different needs: different amount of water (Figure 1 & 2 ). Water is used as the main resource. At the initial stage of the exhibition the distribution of the water will be the same for all 3 greenhouses. However, in the following weeks the quantity of water will be distributed depending on your decision.

Each greenhouse consists of:
1- Governance: in which seeds were planted and water was distributed depending on the viewers' decision.
2- Population 1: peas seeds which need more water than population 2 to sprout.
3- Population 2: green beans which need less water than population 1 to sprout and the current season offers the ideal conditions for them.
4- Resource: Located under each greenhouse and distributed every week to the populations.
